Ingredients

2 cups rolled oats

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 cup unsweetened applesauce

1 cup diced apples (about 2 medium apples, peeled and cored)

½ cup honey or maple syrup

½ cup brown sugar

1/3 cup unsweetened almond milk (or any milk of choice)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

Optional: ½ cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans) or raisins for added texture

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

Combine the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix together the rolled oats, whole wheat flour, ground cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. If you’re adding nuts or raisins, mix them in at this stage.

Mix the Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the applesauce, honey (or maple syrup), brown sugar, almond milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and well combined.

Combine the Mixtures: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until fully combined. Gently fold in the diced apples ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Pour into Baking Dish: Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly with a spatula.

Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 28-32 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool and Slice: Once baked, remove the dish from the oven and let it cool for about 10-15 minutes. Then, lift it out using the parchment paper (if used) or simply cut it directly in the dish into squares.

Serve: Enjoy these squares warm or at room temperature, ideal for breakfast, snacks, or dessert!
